We are celebrating 25 years this month of June 2019
In April of 1994 Marie McCardless, who at that time was NC State Director of GWRRA, contacted Gil Holder at Honda of Sanford to discuss feasibility of organizing a GWRRA chapter in the Sanford area. After Marie made her first visit with us things began to move quickly, and we had our first get together on April 20, 1994 at Ron’s Barn in Sanford with approximately 15 prospective members present. Our next meeting was held on May 16, 1994 to organize and set a kick off date for our chapter, which had been designated NC-S2. We had approximately 25 interested members and prospective members attend. From this meeting we had our Chapter Director, Gil Holder and Assistant Director Kevin Cieciorka; Bill Jones Secretary/Treasurer; Charlie Lobaugh, Newsletter, Mike Campbell and Jude Olive, Ride coordinators; John Clancy, Educator, and Dorothy Campbell, Historian.
We also had a name for our chapter, “Heartland Wings”. Our Chapter name derived from a suggestion by Gil Holder, since Sanford is in the heart of North Caroling and the geography is ideal, it would seem appropriate to name our chapter “Heartland Wings”.
The members voted and thus, NC-S2 had a name.
Our kick-off was held on Sunday, June 26 1994. The kick-off was a big success with the largest attendance ever for a kickoff in the state of North Caroling, with approximately 275 in attendance.
Our first Chapter meeting was held on June 20th 1994, and our first newsletter was July 1994.
Chapter color…
Chapter flag… Our flag was designed by Kevin Cieciorka. The flag has the outline of our state, with a small heart in the middle, and another flag flying from the middle of the heart.
Chapter patch… Our chapter patch was also designed by Kevin Cieciorka. Sanford, NC has long been recognized as the brick capital and with that in mind, the background of our patch is a wall of brick with the outline of the state of NC on the wall, with a heart in the middle.
Chapter S-2’s first Couple of the Year was Johnny and Della Steward, 1995. Our Couple of the Year for 1996 was Al and Shirley McGinnis.
Since the inception of S-2, some things have changed and some have not. The third Monday of the month remains Chapter S2’s meeting time. The enjoyment of riding Goldwing’s and sharing of fellowship with one another still remains strong.
This was written by Gil Holder several years ago and given to me by Larry Sowards who was with K-2 Fayetteville NC at the time.
It looks like Wayne and Debbie Glosson were the Chapter Director from 1996- 2000, I haven’t been able to get more information for this time period if anyone can tell me I would appreciate it.
2003-2005

2006

2007-2008
